QUIT DIETING, EAT NORMALLY
AND LEARN HOW TO MAXIMIZE
YOUR METABOLIC RATE

ACTION STEP 1

The basic assumption underlying the continuing belief that dieting can produce permanent weight loss is that if you burn more calories than you consume every day, you will lose weight. This is an oversimplified statement of a very complex subject. When you reduce caloric intake, the total energy expenditure level of the body does not remain constant. If it did, dieting would work. Not only does energy expenditure not remain constant, shortly after you start a diet the body actually begins to respond to what appears to be a crisis.

In Chapter 4 of my book, you will learn all about Action Step 1 - Quit Dieting and Eat Normally. Many people don't realize that after just two days of significantly reduced caloric intake, the body begins to organize itself to maximize the benefits from the nutrients it does receive. In your own mind you know that you are only planning to be on this diet until you have lost a certain number of pounds, but as far as your body is concerned it is going to starve if total calorie intake continues at this reduced level. On page 25 I explain how the body acts to protect itself from this perceived crisis and how this results in increased levels of fat following each dieting episode.

DIETING, HORMONES AND METABOLISM

Clinical research has demonstrated that overweight people usually have a lower metabolic rate and lower than normal levels of arachidonic acid both before and after weight loss. A lowered metabolic rate results in a reduced thermogenic response while reduced levels of arachidonic acid implies inadequate conversion of essential fatty acids. In Chapter 6 I tell you about clinical research on certain neurotransmitters and the essential fatty acids that directly affect oxygen availability and uptake and the level of thermogenesis in body tissues.

On page 27 you will learn how dieting affects certain hormones and neurotransmitters and the sympathetic nervous system. In Chapters 2 and 6 you will learn why continual dieting, irregular eating habits, inadequate exercise, and insufficient consumption of key nutrients, results in reduced sympathetic nervous system activity and a decrease in overall metabolism.

Clinical research has shown that overweight people already have reduced norepinephrine levels and lower metabolic rates. In fact, they burn from 10 to 30 percent fewer calories than people with normal metabolism. However, there is also some exciting news from this research: in most overweight people, a low metabolic rate can be raised and norepinephrine availability and activity can be increased by certain nutrients and by the right kind of exercise! In Chapters 4 and 6 I will tell you what foods and essential nutrients to take and in Chapter 5 you will learn how the right kind of exercise can raise your metabolic rate as well.

When I started EverTrim, I had not seen any of this research because most of it was either tucked away in scientific journals or simply hadn't been done yet. I wrote my book, Breaking Through the Weight Loss Barrier, because I know from personal experience how much misinformation is directed at overweight people. I also know that when you learn how and why something works, you no longer have to be a victim because you have control over your own destiny. The links below will take you through the key concepts in Action Step 1.
