TALKING BACK
Experts estimate that we have over 60,000 thoughts per day. When I weighed over 200 pounds, I swear that 30,000 of my thoughts each day were negative and had to do with being fat. Where do these thoughts come from? They come from the subconscious mind. I had decided on a conscious level that I would be thin in one year, but my subconscious mind had other ideas! I decided to treat the negative thoughts in my subconscious mind as if they were coming from another person. I started fighting back by Talking Back to that other person. In Chapter 7 I discuss the specific techniques involved in Talking Back and how they affect the chemicals in your body that can help you lose weight. You will learn how to use your imagination to develop the positive emotions that directly affect the biochemistry of your body. Along with the negative comments from the other person, I also had to deal with my fear of yet another failure. But I was angry at being fat so I kept Talking Back until both my fear and that other person disappeared. It took four months for the other person and my fear of failure to finally disappear. In addition to that other person, you sometimes have to use Talking Back on your conscious mind. For instance, when you look in the mirror and don't like what you see, you are not encountering your subconscious mind but rather your conscious reflections. The perspective that you assume in that moment is important. On pages 65 and 66 I will show you how to focus on where you are going instead of focusing on where you have been or where you are. In Chapter 7 you will learn how Talking Back helps your body to create a positive environment for your cells. As an adjunct professor at the School of Medicine at UCLA, Norman Cousins participated in research and development programs in psychosocial healing. One of the principal findings of this work was that using your imagination in the development of positive emotions affects the biochemistry of the body and strengthens the immune system. Once again, the feelings you choose to have and the attitudes you choose to adopt have real chemical consequences! Chapter 7 on Power Thinking will show you how to use this knowledge to help you achieve your weight loss goals.
